Ambassador Winston Lord spoke to U.S.-China tensions at the Council of American Ambassadors Fall Conference, Potpourri of Diplomacy. Ambassador Lord brings significant expertise on China having served as President Reagan's Ambassador to China and President Clinton's Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He also served as Special Assistant to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and Director of the State Department Policy Planning Staff. CAA President Timothy A. Chorba introduced Ambassador Lord and moderated the session.
Ambassador Winston Lord has pursued a distinguished career in foreign policy, holding several high level government positions and guiding many non-governmental organizations devoted to international affairs. Lord served as Special Assistant to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, Director of the State Department Policy Planning Staff, President Reagan’s Ambassador to China, and President Clinton’s Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Earlier in his career he held many positions in the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer and served on the Policy Planning Staff of the Defense Department. Between government postings Lord has been a board member for many non-partisan, private groups on global issues. These include his service as President of the Council on Foreign Relations, Co-Chair of the International Rescue Committee, Chair of the National Endowment for Democracy and Chair of the Carnegie Endowment National Commission on America and the New World.Ambassador Lord earned a B.A. from Yale (magna cum laude) and an M.A. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (first in the class). He has received several honorary degrees; the State Department’s (highest) Distinguished Honor Award and the Defense Department’s Outstanding Performance Award. Lord has appeared on all major media networks and his writings include articles in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, and Foreign Affairs. In May 2019, St. Martins Press will publish Lord’s book, KISSINGER ON KISSINGER, Reflections on Diplomacy, Grand Strategy, and Leadership.Lord is married to the international best-selling author and human rights advocate, Bette Bao Lord. They have two children, Elizabeth and Winston, a daughter-in-law, Stephanie, and two grandchildren, Levi and Tenley.
